Working Science within Virgo-Erigone is not restricted to merely calibrating protolathes and producing experimental gadgets. One might argue such is self-evident: robotics, xenoarcheology and xenobiology exist after all! However - those are jobs for specialists. There is phoron research - but that job only pertains to production of bombs.
On the average Space Station 13 server, it is not uncommon to treat and be expected to treat [[Cyborg|silicons/cyborgs]] as expendable, as little better than a kitchen appliance. As a tool. '''WE ARE NOT LIKE THAT.''' One of our most important rules is to [[Rules#Be respectful to other players|be respectful of other players]], and this includes cyborgs. Just because their laws technically give you authority over them - you should not abuse this power to make their roleplay unenjoyable. Our [[Vital Lore|heavily divergent lore]] reinforces this intent: silicons [[Synthetics#Drone Levels|(bar specific, opt-in exceptions)]] are treated as having equal rights as any other sapient.


But what if there was something more engaging, more mysterious in its fruits? Enter the Particle Smasher!
Conversely, if you are playing a silicon you should remember that first: your [[Cyborg#Silicon Laws, The Rules, and You|standard laws]] are equivalent in priority - none is more important than the other, furthermore you are free to refuse orders from even the Captain if it outside your job description. In many ways, simply following our [[rules]] will carry you along. However, this leniency to cyborg players compared to elsewhere (primarily to enable scenes) comes with responsibility. If you end up with laws that would force you to make the round unenjoyable for others or antag - it is wise to ahelp and ask for clarification before commiting to whatever was asked of you. Our staff will happily provide clarifications, and even assist if the laws make you uncomfortable - so do not be afraid to ask for guideance.

The Particle Smasher is a device used to take one form of matter, contained securely within a beaker in a ground form and transform it to a wild new state!
 
Four key variables determine what is produced:
 
# High-power beams of energy to trigger reactions and changes.
# A source of intense ionizing radiation to bombard target material - Beware! More is not always better!
# Specific atmospheric conditions - this can be particularly finicky, just ask your xenoarcheologist friends colleagues!
# Target material, elements, or other things. The particle focus has a fitting to attach beakers to safely introduce catalysts into a reaction!

* The Particle smasher is a challenging experimental tool. It is advisable to work with others to avoid disaster.
** Requesting assistance from engineers familiar with atmospherics and radiation can make the difference between death and a successful publication!
** Medical can help with more than just saving you from the inevitable radiation poisoning. After all, we're basically doing alchemy! Chemists might know a thing.
* Depending on how you go on to produce the background radiation, it is a good idea to do your experiment somewhere it won't hurt others who were not involved in the mad science.
* Sometimes the fruits of your labour may reject attempts at holding them with a barehand.

On the average Space Station 13 server, it is not uncommon to treat and be expected to treat silicons/cyborgs as expendable, as little better than a kitchen appliance. As a tool. WE ARE NOT LIKE THAT. One of our most important rules is to be respectful of other players, and this includes cyborgs. Just because their laws technically give you authority over them - you should not abuse this power to make their roleplay unenjoyable. Our heavily divergent lore reinforces this intent: silicons (bar specific, opt-in exceptions) are treated as having equal rights as any other sapient.
