<hr>
Vulpkanin are a species of sapient canine bipeds, who are the descendants of a lost colony during the waning days of a Precursor species, from which their distant cousins, the Zorren, also originate from. Independent and iconoclast, they have abandoned the ideals of their forefathers largely and prefer to look outwards as explorers and scientists to forge their own identity. They speak a guttural language known as 'Canilunzt' which has a heavy emphasis on utilizing tail positioning and ear twitches to communicate intent.
Overview
*Vulpkanin have their own language, Caninluzt, which you can speak by typing ,V
*All Vulpkanin have claws, and will scratch with them instead of punching, dealing extra damage.
*Vulpkanin have no species wide restriction on diet, whereas other species might.
*Vulpkanin are less vulnerable to harm from cold due to their fur, but more vulnerable to harm from heat. This is less extreme than tajara, however
Biology
Vulpkanin are a species of bipedal omnivorous mammal-analogues. Their biology closely resembles that of other major Orion Spur sapient species, permitting the standard medicinal care without the need for special considerations. Their thick fur, adapted for the colder, albeit still temperate weather of Altam leaves them slightly uncomfortable within standard Human and Skrell inspired habitats.
They are closely related to the Zorren, even achieving cross-fertility with them with only minor edits to the genome necessary. Offspring between Zorren or Vulpkanin often express genetic traits of the former, although often smaller in overall height and with larger ears.
While the unmodified vulpkanin is said to be closer to the now-lost precursor species who had once dominated the Coreward Periphery, over the many millenia of isolation enough genetic drift occured so that DNA-locked artifacts no longer recognize them as their true masters.
As a species culturally driven towards science and self-actualization, sometimes to the point of conflict and incompatibility, Vulpkanin embrace genesplicing, leading to a highly diverse range of appearances.
Culture and Religion
It has been hypothesized by both Commonwealth scholars and the vulpkanin themselves that Altam may have been established as a market world by the Precursors. Spared of the horrible destruction Virgo Prime suffered, there was never a need for rigid social hierarchies. Before long, Altam became a mapmaker's nightmare of communes, company towns, city states and minor countries. The abundance of resources and technology to be reverse engineered permitted non-conformists to just pack up and leave, pitch their tent elsewhere and try to form a society in their own design.
The ability to colonize nearby systems had only made this tendency worse, and today the Vulpkanin call a rather slow, dysfunctional confederacy of all these competing societies their 'government'. It is said the only time anything actually gets done is when a member state assumes emergency powers and exploits executive powers to drive resources and co-operation. Being the only means towards such, powerful elements have come to call the smallest of issues disasters and emergencies justifying their power grabs.
Technology
Despite the massive boon their ancestors gave them to thrive where their kindred suffered - the Vulpkanin hold little reverence for the Precursors. Curiosity? Yes, especially for technologies that further their goals and welfare. Actual cultural curiosity and respect? Only a passing academic interest. Being a chaotic mess of polities - this of course varies, with hints of Zorren-like pseudo-religious reverence, but those who refuse to adapt often end up being left behind in influence. Where Zorren may refuse to modify old technologies out of a matter of honour, Vulpkanin with gleefully make it unrecognizable if it works.
Unfortunately, this very innovative drive stifles industrial prowess. Without collective infrastructure projects, resource management - all these advantages leave the Vulpkanin far behind their now, as the Zorren would say, wasted potential. Where the Zorren may - one day should a miraclous unification bring them under one banner - become a dominant force in the Periphery, the Vulpkanin have no such possibility, the ancient weapons destroyed and repurposed for whimsical, decadent needs. Somewhat on par with Backstory#Tajaran_Diaspora, and perhaps the [Backstory#Third_Ares_Confederation - perhaps there is no need for those weapons after all.
Relations
Lacking in any true centralized government - relations with other factions vary significantly by individual polity of the Vulpkanin diaspora. Situated on the verge of the Trailing Wilderness, territorial disputes with major factions have not posed an issue.
As a rule, the various governments maintain cordial relations bolstering trade and exchange of information with other civilizations.
Relations with their Zorren relatives are more nuanced - contact had been made when the two species returned to the stars proper. However, the divergences in their culture - the iconoclast, progressive ways of the Vulpkanin led to disapproval and pity from the Zorren. Vulpkanin themselves care little for these labels, having their own future to sort out. As fellow descendants of the precursors, the occasional academic reaches out in hopes to hash out murky details, archeological finds with marginal success: after all, why would the Zorren help these spoiled brats who abandoned the old ways?
