How to download and set up BYOND
To actually join the game, you will need to download the BYOND game engine. You can do this at http://www.byond.com/download/
Once you have downloaded the version for your operating system, you need to either install it via the .exe that comes with it, or extract the zip folder that you have downloaded and start the byond.exe in the /bin folder. It's that simple, this application is used every time you wish to launch the game.
You will need a BYOND account to actually play the game, and you should make one at https://secure.byond.com/?page=Join A BYOND account is completely free, and requires only a username, password and email. You should, as with any site, use a unique password that you are able to either store safely or remember reliably.
Once you have created an account, you are able to launch the byond.exe application and log into the login screen. You must not proceed as a guest from the login screen, despite the option being available, as VoreStation does not allow guests to connect.
How to update BYOND
There are two primary ways of updating Byond, which we will detail the process of here.
Updating via the client
- On the BYOND client, there is a panel on home tab that will tell you if you are playing the most recent update of the game, or if there is an update available.
- If you have an update available, simply click the Update button and the game will be updated to the most recent version.
- Above the options is a toggle to switch between the Stable and Beta versions of BYOND. You can use this to upgrade and downgrade between those two versions.
- That is all you need to do, but it will only ever give you the most recent versions of the game and this may not be the most compatible with the server.
Downloading a specific version
- Navigate to https://www.byond.com/download/build/
- Choose the BYOND version of your choice, the highest number near the bottom is the most recent version.
- Inside of this folder, you will see various different files for each build.
- Choose the build number that you want to use, again the higher numbers near the bottom are the most recent.
- It is recommended that you download the file named "_byond.zip".
- Extract this folder somewhere that you can easily find it.
- Go into the folder, go into the bin subfolder and simply launch the game via byond.exe
NOTE: Installing it this way does not overwrite your current version of byond unless you specifically install it in the same place. This allows you to keep multiple versions of BYOND at the same time and switch between them at your whim.
The current recommended version
The current recommended version of BYOND to install is 516.1651
There are known issues with versions 1652 through to 1654 that will causes crashes and graphical issues.
Troubleshooting
- Reinstall BYOND completely by following the steps in the Downloading a specific version section.
- Clear the BYOND cache by going to the BYOND client and following these steps:
- Press the cogwheel settings button in the top right.
- Open "Preferences..."
- Navigate to the "Games" tab.
- Press the "Clear Cache".
